What The Heck????

It's been almost 2 years since I had anything to share on my blog? How pitiful is that? Well, The Redhead aka Patty and I are still alive and kicking. My diabetes is under control and the beautiful Redhead is even more ravishing than ever since she dropped over 50 lbs through Weight Watchers. Check her out. Wahooo!!!

Last month we attended our annual Winter scrapbooking retreat in Seaside and I created some new digital scrapbook pages. I've included them here for your viewing pleasure. Don't' forget you can click on each page for a closer looksee.

I had forgotten how much I really enjoy digital scrapbooking. I hope to keep with it and will post new pages as they become available.

Wow.... Where did the time go?

Just as the weather began to improve and everyone was getting comfortable with one another the week had passed. It was time to head home.

Monday was the last full day and we took advantage of it by touring the Alberta St. district. This neighborhood is experiencing a revitalization and there are a number of small new shops offering everything from do-it-yourself pottery classes, a plant nursery, boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants.

Jessica found some OK earrings she couldn't live without and the stinker caught me checking my eyelids for pinhole leaks.

Not fair!!!!

We ate dessert first at Petite Provence and followed that with halibut and chips, lobster and sweet potato fries and PBR during Happy Hour at our favorite restaurant, Halibuts II.

Yum, yum.

Tuesday was travel day and after some last minute photos it was time to catch their flights south. Jessica was a treat to meet and very "low maintenance". We hope she will be back again to see more of our beautiful state. That is, if I didn't scare her off with my "road rage" incident at the post office.

J & J's Portland Adventures - Easter Sunday

For us Easter actually started a couple of day early when we decided to dye some eggs. Rather than follow the tried and true method we wanted to use a method we had seen on the Martha Stewart show. Jessica is a very crafty girl and was more than game.

It involves using 100% silk fabric. We scoured the local thrift shops for old silk blouses, ties, vests, robes and even boxers. We got a great selection for about $10.00 and had been storing them for over a year waiting for the right time. Now that time had come.

Jessica and I cut the fabric into squares and Patty joined us in wrapping the squares tightly around the eggs and securing them with twist ties. The next step is to boil them for about 20 minutes. After they cool you unwrap them and go crazy over the abstract designs left from the silk dye.

We had lots of fun as shown by the pictures.

Easter Sunday we slept in some and I began dinner preparation. Jessica and Jamie wanted to go back to Saturday Market but they were disappointed that a lot of the vendors from Saturday decided to skip the market on Easter.

Dinner was good and the special order cake was delicious. It was lemon overload when we added some lemon gelato from Mio Gelato.

J & J's Portland Adventures - Day 4

Saturday - Day 4 was shaping up to be another busy, busy day.

First on the agenda was a ride on our mass transit train nicknamed MAX. We caught the MAX at a local mall and rode it into downtown Portland so the girls could shop at Saturday Market.

The MAX lets you off right in front of Saturday Market. The market is open each weekend from March through Christmas and only allows vendors who hand make their wares. So everything is handmade in some fashion and there is an ever changing assortment of goods. We go about every other year now to see what is new and different.

Jamie has been many times and we have taken Gabriel and Daniel as well.

Jessica was "blown away" by the cool items for sale but because we were on a tight schedule wasn't able to see all the booths before we had to leave. She did manage to find a couple of neat hats and other items she couldn't live without. We had reservations for tea at 2pm so we had to go before seeing everything. It was pretty evident they would be back the next day (Easter) time permitting.

There's a store in Sherwood called Sleighbells. Actually it's on the outskirts of Sherwood and actually it's an old farmhouse. It is a store full of Christmas decorations for sale. They have two stories full of every type and brand of Christmas theme decoration you can imagine. They also have rooms full of decorations for Halloween, Easter, St. Patrick's and 4th of July. If you are looking for something special to complete some collection you will probably find it here.

In the center of the house is another business called Teas Me and they serve what I call a proper English tea. The menu includes finger sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, lemon curds and fancy desserts. Each service includes a pot of tea.

I had been there before and knew that they had a special blend of tea called Happy Hour so I ordered it and after everyone tasted it, they ordered it too. It was a fun and magical time and we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Jamie bought some of the Happy Hour tea to take home.

After a leisurely tea and some more shopping we took pictures of the wildlife and got back on the road.

Next stop was Helen Bernhard's bakery in Portland. We had to get there before they closed to pick up the cake Jamie ordered for Easter dinner. We made it with about half an hour to spare.

It turned out to be another rush, rush day but everyone had fun and got to do some new and different things.

Did you see a dog?

Our neighbor, Steven, was born on the 4th of July. Now he believes every Independence Day celebration is for him.

Just kidding.....

For the past 4 years we have celebrated his birthday with some sort of special activity. It usually ends up after dark with fireworks in the street as we dodge passing cars.

In 2008 we were joined by his mother, Gwen, when we took him to a fancy dinner at Jake's Grill in downtown Portland. The food is fabulous and we had a great time with presents, cards and the sort.

Near the end of the dinner a large group of folks were seated in our area. Not long after they sat down we caught sight of something moving under our table. We looked and were aghast to see a little white poodle-type dog zooming around.

What the????

Turns out one of the 20-something girls from the other table sneaked the dog in her purse and it had escaped. They managed to get it back into the purse but had to remove it from the restaurant when we complained to the manager.

The Japanese Garden - Pt. 2

The Japanese Garden is soooooooooooo beautiful it really was hard to condense the event to just 4 pages. We had a lot of fun and created some great memories.

If you ever visit Portland this is a must see for anyone who appreciates flowers, gardens or anything Asian. Enjoy the pictures, we sure did.

Day 3 - The Japanese Garden and NW Portland

By day 3 are butts were really starting to drag. Morning was spent having a leisurely breakfast at home. We did a little shopping in the Beaumont-Wilshire district then had lunch at Tuk-Tuk's.

They serve great Thai food. Some of our favorites are the Rock&Roll salad rolls (with yummy peanut sauce), lemongrass chicken and taro bubble tea. Jamie is so fond of the salad rolls she insists on having an order to herself.

The afternoon was spent touring the Japanese Garden. It is so beautiful and peaceful there you want to just slow down and take it all in. When Jamie brought her brother Daniel to Portland we took him there too.

In the early spring the garden is more about structure and form because most of the flowers haven't bloomed yet and the maples haven't leafed out. Still there is lots of water features and great buildings, cool paths and walkways and many different pagodas.

After the leaving the garden we took Jessica to the trendy Pearl District where she was able to visit Powell's Book store (largest West of the Mississippi) and have gelato at Jamie's favorite place, Mio Gelato.

Patty taught school all day but was home waiting for us when we got there. We took the girls to Gustav's Bier Stube for Happy Hour. Jamie has been wanting to go there for a year now because we are always raving about the inexpensive and tasty food they have.

We ate their famous swiss cheese fondue and things like Shephard's pie, chicken schnitzels and ceaser salad.

This trip is quickly turning into a whirlwind of Jamie's "must see" attractions and "must try" eateries.

Doing the Zoo - Pt. 3

The elephants are always a treat at the zoo. They have a long and successful history breeding Indian elephants. The most recent addition is a little guy named Sam.

Sam was born last August and is as cute as can be. His mom had no experience with babies so there was a lot of concern right after he was born. They split them up for a couple of weeks but eventually reunited them and now they can't be kept apart.

I thought it would be cute to use the picture of Jessica on the tractor in conjunction with the elephant picture to tie them together.

Doing the Zoo - Pt. 2

OK here are the next two zoo pages. The lorikeets were fun and very colorful. Jessica was bold enough to feed them and at one time she had four of them fighting for food. They are engaging little birds and a treat to watch. The keepers are concerned about hygiene so they make you wash your hands before entering the aviary and after leaving.

The two polar bears are brother and sister. They have two different enclosures but they are connected so they have a choice of where they want to be. When we first saw them the male was swimming laps on one side and his sister was pacing in the bigger pen. Eventually the male came over to her pen and they ended up in the water together. He goofed around with her and she played for a bit but eventually she got tired of him and even though she is much smaller she chased him back into the other enclosure. Watching them interact was the highlight of my day.

Day 2 - Doing the Zoo

We finally made it to the zoo. Not as early as planned but we made it.

At the Oregon Zoo you can drive right up and park outside the entrance in the nice big ungated parking lot.

It's not until you pay for your zoo admission that they tell you it costs $2.00 for parking. Very sneaky since you're already there and there's no other place to park.

To add insult to injury, they tell you there is NO parking fee AND you get a discount on admission IF you took MAX (public transportation) to get there. Thanks, NOT.

The weather improved as the day went on and it turned out to be an OK day. There were many new exhibits to see and much construction going on to update some old compounds.

My personal favorite animals and exhibits were the elk, wolves, bats, lorikeets, leopard, elephants and polar bears. Between Jamie and us we took almost 200 photos and I was able to condense them down to about 6 pages for the storybook.

ECO Friendly and Proud of it

Having lived in Portland for almost 30 years I think I can safely call myself an Oregonian. Most everyone knows that Oregonians are all tree-hugging, granola-eating, Birkenstock wearing webfooted folks.

I am no different and now I have an official sign to proclaim my eco- friendly attitude. When we go camping in our self-contained RV, before we even light up the campfire, I will be hanging up my new sign for all to see.

Go Green.

J & J's Portland Adventures - Day 2

Day 2 dawns with me heading off to work early while everyone is still sleeping. A couple of hours later I'm back but no one has made it through the shower yet. This it the day Jamie wants to be at the zoo from the time they open until closing time. What's up?

They get moving and before long we are running out the door with umbrellas and rain coats in hand. This is Portland, after all.

Just as the front door slams shut, Patty and I look at each other and almost in unison say, "Do you have the keys?" Nope. ****Crap****

Being paranoid as I am we don't have a hide-a-key and the only neighbor with a spare key is currently in Eastern Oregon. What now?

Off to the other neighbor to borrow their phone and call a locksmith. A half hour later we are $60 poorer but we have keys and have learned an expensive lesson.

If you are too freaked out to hide a key outside make sure everyone on the block has one. Makes sense to me.

Off to breakfast we go but on the way we detour to neighbor Bill's vintage collectible shop, Rita Deco. Jamie and Patty like checking out his shop and they wanted Jessica to see it also. After Jessica bought a lighted turtle we go across the street for breakfast at Sam's Billiard Parlor.

Sam's is a real working billiard parlor but they serve good breakfast meals at reasonable prices and Jamie likes their fresh-made berry preserves. Last time she was here she took home a pint of their raspberry jam. She says it didn't last long at their house.

Now we were finally headed for the zoo. Zoo news and pictures to follow.

J & J's Portland Adventures

Day 1 - Arrival

Jamie wanted to introduce her sister, Jessica, to dear old dad and the city of Portland. So they packed their bags (many for Jamie and one for Jessica) and headed for the great Pacific Northwest.

Patty and I met them at the airport with a chauffeur-looking sign and a couple of long stemmed roses. Portland really is the City of Roses, you know. Everyone who saw our sign thought we were there to meet royalty or at least some movie stars. When J&J spotted us they cracked up at the sign and it proved to be a great "icebreaker" since this was the first time meeting Jessica. Jessica is really a sweet girl and not anything like Jamie made her out to be. Ha, ha.

After dropping off their bags at home everyone was hungry so we headed to one of Jamie's favorite food spots. Pambiche is a Cuban restaurant with a great happy hour menu and wonderful desserts. We took full advantage of both and had a leisurely late lunch. We got to know Jessica better and discussed what the next week in Portland would be like.

After lunch we had to go by Jamie's favorite Portland bakery, Helen Bernhard's, to order our Easter cake and pick up some goodies for the week. Jamie ordered a 2 layer white cake with lemon jelly filling and lemon flavored French creme frosting with Easter related stuff decorating the top. Pictures to follow on day 6 blog.

Patty bought special iced cookies and later that evening we went to Bill and Steven's (our neighbors) so Jessica could meet them. As usual, they were gracious hosts and accepted Jessica right away. She got the royal tour of their house while we shared the cookies and had coffee/tea.

Back home we made up the futon downstairs for Jessica. The cats went off to bed in the garage and it was lights out.

Memorial for Lori

Patty's friend from childhood, Lori, recently passed away unexpectedly. The family and friends will be celebrating her life with a memorial service this Saturday at the grade school where she taught kindergarten for many years.

Patty will be attending and she asked me to help her create some scrapbook pages she could share with those in attendance

Jamie and Jessica did make it safe and sound. They stayed a week.

During that time we made them get up early every day and them we dragged their weary bodies all over Portland.

We had decent weather and we managed to cram a lot of activities into a short amount of time. Between us we took almost 500 photos and I'm just now starting to sort and edit them. They will be the subject of my first formal hardbound storybook (in scrapbook style) and along the way I will be posting the pages as they are completed.

More to follow, including a photo of a rare sighting at the Oregon Zoo.

Jamie and Jessica are coming....

Ok, by now you know that is not a picture of Jamie and Jessica. I didn't have one of Jessica so I threw in one of Jamie and Gabe. Anyway J & J are coming tomorrow for a visit and will be here over Easter.

This will be the first time I've spent any time with Jessica. The only other time we met was at Jamie's high school graduation.

We have big plans and are looking forward to showing her Portland. Pray for decent weather. More to follow (including pics) as it becomes available.

It was the best of times.....it was the worst of times

Yesterday, Palm Sunday, was a glorious day. We finally had a sunny day with temps. hovering in the low 70's.

Sorry Dawn, I couldn't help gloating.

We had All-You-Can-Eat spaghetti dinner at St. Rita's Church with Bill and Steven. This is the 4th year in a row for us and the food was especially good. Our waitress was engaging and very helpful.

After dinner I enlisted Patty's help in completing a digital scrapbook layout of her friends, Sheri and Aart (correct spelling, funny eh?). She has known them since 6th grade and they ended up getting married after high school.

Through all the years Patty and Sheri have remained "best friends". Nothing has dulled their friendship. Not the miles; moves; job changes or tragedies. A couple of years ago they even flew to Los Angeles just to be part of the audience on the Dr. Phil show.

Last year Patty was soooooo stressed out about her mother's health and was spending all of her time caring for Grandma Pat. I drove to Albany (where Patty was staying) and stole her away for a day.

We paid a surprise visit to her "best friend" Sheri at her farm. I wanted fresh strawberries (my excuse) but really I wanted Patty to have some "girl-time" with Sheri. I knew Sheri could comfort Patty and give her a caring shoulder to lean on. Sheri did just that, in spades.

We took our camera because I had never been to Sheri's home/farm but had heard a lot about it. We got some great shots and even managed to get Aart to stop long enough to pose for a pic. It was these pics that I wanted Patty to help me scrapbook.

We worked late into the night and got it finished, except for the date when they started the farm. Patty said she would call Sheri and get the date. (Who knows when. They send each other cards all the time but talk on the phone only once or twice a year)

This morning at 8:00am the phone rang. It was Sheri calling. I asked Patty if she had already called Sheri and she said, No. (Freaky, eh?) Sheri was calling to tell Patty that another of their best friends, Lori, had died unexpectedly on Palm Sunday.

It was the best of times.....it was the worst of times.

Patty is pretty torn up. Please keep her and Lori's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Today I scrapped a 2-page spread about the elk viewing trip I took this past February.

For those that don't know, I work part-time at Portland Parks & Recreation in the Senior Rec. program as an assistant van driver and trip leader. We take small groups of seniors on day trips to area attractions. The trip can last up to 8 hours and includes a meal at some nearby cafe/tea room/tavern or deli. If we find a happy hour somewhere that's always a BIG thrill. But I have digressed.

This trip was to the Jewell Meadows Refuge where they feed a resident herd of elk through the winter. You can make reservations to ride along with the volunteer when he feeds them the alfalfa. He has a trailer pulled by a tractor and you go right into the meadow and help him spread the hay from the trailer. The elk like the easy meal and will come right up to the trailer (within 30 feet or so). Any sudden movement or sound will spook them (the elk not the seniors) so you have to be still. Not to hard to do for a bunch of seniors. ; )

These elk are wild and are not fenced in at all. They roam on and off of the refuge and occasionally will get shot during hunting season if they leave the refuge. We got to spend almost 2 hours with the elk before we had to leave.

Afterwards we went to Camp 18 for lunch. Camp 18 is an old logging camp turned restaurant located on Hwy 6 about 18 (imagine that) miles from the coast. More about that later when I do a layout on the trip Patty and I took when we had lunch there. A way cool place with good food and lots of it.

MetroSexual Me

Most guys would have a mini-me. I instead, have a metrosexual me. It's time I come out of the closet. Close family members already know but now I'm putting it out there for the rest of the world.

I'm obsessed with scrapbooking. Not the traditional style but digitial scrapbooking. I tried that paper, scissors and tape stuff but I just didn't have the patience. (I feel your pain, Dawn)

Patty's Creative Memory consultant , Pam Winn, kept pushing me toward digital scrapbooking but I resisted.

Wouldn't it cut into my online poker playing? Come on. I'm a guy, we all play poker online.

Then it happened. BAM!!!

This February we spent a weekend scrapbooking with Pam and another 75 women at her annual Seaside Beach Retreat. Most of them were busy cropping photos, making title blocks and journaling. I tried but it just wasn't working for me.

One woman had her laptop and she was composing pages like everyone else. She didn't have a dozen bags full of papers, pictures, tools, stickers and blank album pages. All she needed was her laptop.

I watched her and asked a TON of questions. Her pages were beautiful and creative. I knew then that this is the kinda scrapbooking I could get behind.

I bought the Creative Memories software ( 20% discount because it was my birthday) and when we got home I loaded it on my computer.

Instantly another scrapbooking addict (the digital kind) was born.

Tonight I finished my 4th layout and am already looking forward to the next one.

There, I've said it. I'm addicted to digital scrapbooking and not ashamed of it. Where will it all end?

These pages tell the story of a road trip we took last June to Stevenson, Washington. We spent a long weekend at an RV park. We did some sightseeing in Hood River and White Salmon, stayed up late around the campfire roasting marshmellows and did some whitewater rafting in the White Salmon river. Tons of fun and only 50 miles from home. Remember gas was going for $4.00 a gallon. Hope you enjoy the layouts.

St. Paddy's Day Feast

Yesterday we had our 3rd Annual St. Patrick's Day dinner with our neighbors Bill and Steven. Patty is famous for her "boiled dinner" (corned beef and vegatables) and she didn't disappoint. She really loves to host dinner parties but she doesn't get to very much because I'm such a party pooper. She sets a pretty table, always very much "in theme".

Steven was kind enough to bring dessert. A wonderfully good Lemon Sponge cake from the Helen Bernhart bakery. It was soooo light we had to hold it down on our plates while we ate it. It had French cream frosting and lemon jelly slices on top. Yum yum!

Bonsai Club Visits With David DeGroot

Members of the Portland Bonsai Club helped with chores at the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection and for their reward were invited to the home of David DeGroot (the curator) for coffee and treats and to view his private collection. In addition David invited the members to bring one of their own trees for him to evaluate and for his constructive criticism. His garden was spectacular and he and his wife were gracious hosts. It's not hard to understand why David is a world renowned bonsai expert. It was a long day but well worth the effort.

Bonsai Volunteer Work Party

This summer Patty went to the Seattle Pacific Rim Bonsai garden with a group of volunteers from our local bonsai club. Each year we help the garden perform various chores like cleanup and weed pulling. In exchange they get to tour the exhibit and go behind the scenes into the greenhouses where the rest of the exhibit is housed. This exhibit is world famous and has many donated trees that are very old. This year the curator gave them a special treat after working when he invited them to his home to view his private collection of trees. She said it was truly amazing to see these rare specimens and to visit with the curator at his home. I will do another quick blog to show off the pictures from his private collection.

Last Christmas our ex-neighbors (Ericca & Jeff) gave us and The Boys gift certificates for dining at any of the McCormick and Schmicks restaurants. We used the first one recently at their RiverPlace restaurant. It's located on the harbor (nice views) and we had a table next to the window so we could people watch.

Dinner was great, as usual and the desserts were to die for. The waitress brought the wrong dessert first and then replaced it with the right one - free of charge. Safe to say my blood sugar took a major hit that night.

Ft. Stevens Camping

Just The Facts, Ma'am!

Who: Me, Patty and The Boys (aka. Bill and Steven)

What: Annual Fall camping trip

Where: Ft. Stevens State Park

When: Sept. 14-17, 2007

For the past 2 years we have planned a camping trip in September (after the kids go back to school). This year it was to the Oregon Coast. Ft. Stevens State Park near Astoria. This was our first stay at this park but the second trip for The Boys. The weather was cool and sometimes drizzly but It Is The Coast and The Start of Fall.

After arriving Friday afternoon and setting up camp we decided to eat out at a local eatery called Buoy 9. The Boys had eaten there before and they highly recommended it. It did not disappoint!!! The food was done to perfection; the portions were huge and the prices were very reasonable. I had a 14 oz. cut of prime rib with all the fixing's for just $18.00. Their daily drink specials are only $2.50. That day it was called a Limbo and was filled with rum, orange juice, banana liqueur. Very tasty, indeed. We finished the night sitting around the campfire feeling great just being away from town.

The next day we spent exploring the Southwest Coast of Washington. We went to the Saturday Market at Ilwaco where we got to see an old-time tall sailing ship, "The Lynx"; had lunch in Long Beach; toured 2 lighthouses and a decommissioned big gun battery that was used to protect the entrance to the Columbia River from 1900-1944. Everything was great except the hike to the Cape Disappointment lighthouse. It turned out to be a whole lot of up and down trekking on dirt paths with not much of a view until you actually got to the lighthouse. Got some great pics.

Saturday night was dinner at The Boys. Salad, stew, bread and ice cream for dessert. Yummy. Word of warning - watch out when Steven is mixing the cocktails. Not a measuring device insight. Patty became the latest victim as we spent another warm and dry night around the campfire.

Sunday we awoke to rain. Had breakfast at Buoy 9. They were serving a special french toast made with apple strudel bread which was better than my biscuits and gravy. Still large portions and great prices. Next it was off to Astoria Sunday Market. Quite impressive for a small town. About 70 vendors and they closed off 3 streets. Patty was wet and cold so she bought a cute wool cap made of recycled sweaters. We got some plants, kettle corn and a personalized stamped id tag for Boo (our newest kitty).

The rest of the day was spent visiting attractions in and around Astoria and down the coast at Seaside. It rained on and off all day and into the night. Dinner was at our trailer. We fixed salad, lasagna, garlic bread and more ice cream. Turns out both camps brought ice cream figuring to surprise the other - Surprise!!!! Can't really go wrong with Ben & Jerry's, no matter what the flavor. No campfire, too wet. We huddled in our trailer and played a board game. As usual Patty and Steven got to laughing about some silly joke and he almost made himself sick with all the giggles.

Monday we didn't have to leave until 1 pm so we had breakfast and headed out to see some of the sights that were close by. Went to the beach to see the shipwreck, found seashells, saw the end of the jetty (most westerly point of Oregon) and another gun emplacement. Then it was time to hook up and head for home. Only a 2 hour drive home so we were there in time to attend a meeting of one of the garden clubs we belong to. Great trip with no mishaps. Even had a bear sighting, ask me about it sometime. Can't wait until our next big adventure.
